Giant Pumpkins

It's sometimes fun to go through our old photos of previous haunts and rediscover things you've done in the past that have faded away from your memory. This photo is from our 2010 haunt, our first haunt at the "new" house. A co-worker grew the giant pumpkin that season and donated it to our haunt. It was so heavy that it had to be cleaned and carved on the lawn where it was going to go.

Haunted Eve's Time Machine: Halloween Haunt 2017

Haunted Eve Halloween 2017
"Vampires" has to be our favorite haunt theme of them all to do. We had done our first vampire haunt theme way back in 2002, revisited it in 2009, and then did the theme for the first time at this house in 2017. We had also done a werewolf themed haunt back in 2004. So for 2017 we decided to mix in the werewolf theme as well by adding new scary "White Moon Werewolf" and "Vampire-Wolf Hybrid" masked mannequins to the haunt. We retired our 2002 "Top Hat Dracula" mask after 2017. The mask's latex was starting to dry rot and tear and we felt he had made enough appearances over the years, e.g. we got bored with him.

Haunted Eve's Time Machine: Halloween Haunt 2015

Haunted Eve Halloween 2015
Our 2015 haunt introduced a major new component, the front paver terrace. For our 2014 haunt, we had built a small altar table to place in front of our dining room bump out window, which proved to be difficult to deploy due to the grading in that area. We had to offset the altar table leg lengths in order for it to sit level. With the way the builders had graded the area in front of the dining room window, the area was pitched down towards the inner corner of the house's foundation, which is a drainage no-no! Also, we found that any Halloween props we placed in that corner became visually lost due to the fact they were standing in a depression. The uneven grade in that area also proved to be difficult in safely using a ladder to put any type of holiday light stringers up on the gutters, so Mrs. Haunted Eve posed the question at the end of 2014, "What if we built a raised terrace in that spot to level it out?" And in the spring of 2015, Mr. Haunted Eve went to work on building the paver terrace. It makes a great display stage for our haunts, solved the slope drainage issues, and made putting up holiday lights on the gutters a whole lot safer! We were not the original owners of this house, because if we had designed the house from scratch, we would have had that entire front space be one large covered porch, but you work with what you've got.

Haunted Eve's Time Machine: Halloween Haunt 2013

Haunted Eve Halloween 2013
2013 would be the last time we setup the "traditional cemetery" in the front yard for our haunts at this current house. While the cemetery photographed nicely and provided a depth of field for the haunt visually, we felt it was pretty much ignored on Halloween night by trick-or-treaters and their parents. Our front porch is about 75 feet from the street and on Halloween night people here tend to be "all business" when it comes to trick-or-treating because they have a lot more ground to cover between homes, so we came to the conclusion that our 2011 haunt setup experiment with the headstones placed along the side of the garage wall/front walkway made more sense, especially since our haunt is only up for 2 or 3 nights max.

Another Great Halloween

Despite the awful weather and close to 2 inches of rain, we had 111 trick-or-treaters tonight. Good thing we bought extra candy! This was our 10th Halloween in this house and we got more complements this evening regarding the haunt than any prior Halloween. We're very happy how everything turned out despite the mess Mother Nature threw at us. We will be uploading a comprehensive photo album of the haunt pictures to Flickr tomorrow.

Last Looks Before Halloween

We worked on the final costuming for the mannequins and props and did some lighting tests since it's only one week until Halloween. Only major thing left to do really is carve the pumpkins next week.
