Lussinatten🕯️

December 13th marks the festival of Saint Lucia. But it is also a celebration for her lesser known counterpart, the witch Lussi. According to the old Julian calendar, the night between December 12th and December 13th was the longest night of the year, historically what Norwegians called Lussinatten. Between Lussi Night & Yule, trolls, elves, witches, & evil spirits were thought to be active outside as depicted in Nils Bergslien's 1922 painting "Julereia". It was believed to be particularly dangerous to be out during Lussi Night. According to tradition, children who had done mischief had to take special care, since Lussi could come down through the chimney & take them away, & certain tasks of work in the preparation for Yule had to be finished, or else Lussi would come to punish the household.
